Note: If a Custom Facility Plan is selected, students are responsible for emailing the faculty member for approval for selected facility prior to submitting the assignment.

HCS446 Week-3 Facility Planning-Floor Plan (Birthing Center)

Health care facilities are unique and have clearly defined characteristics based on the needs of the facility or population being served. Poor design may lead to staff, visitor, or patient stress. In large facilities, inability to find a department may lead to frustrations and disorientation for older patients. Poor layout may also lead to staff inefficiencies or fines because of failure to meet regulatory requirements.

Part 1:

Using ToolWire® SmartDraw®, create a floor plan of the facility that you selected in the Week Two Facility Selection and Research assignment. You will add to your floor plan each week. The final floor plan is due in Week Five.

Include the following environmental design elements:

Structure:

• Walls
• Doors
• Hallways
• Waiting areas
• Other related structural components

Areas:

• Customer service and amenities
• Reception desk, bathroom, shower, vending machine, etc.
• Patient consultation areas
• Clinical support areas
• Nurses station, charting areas, etc.

HCS446 Week-3 Bariatric Unit Facility Planning

Imagine that you work with a team of hospital facility designers. An investor has asked your team to design a bariatric unit for the local hospital. As you and your team start to work, you find that the standards for developing a bariatric unit are not as well defined as other units. Your team has several opinions for what this unit may look like and would like to work individually at first to develop more options.

Part 1: Individual Work

Research bariatric units and designing bariatric units in a hospital setting.

Based on your research, create an ideal bariatric facility using ToolWire® SmartDraw®. Save your design for use in Part 2 of this assignment.

 

Part 2: Team Work

Create a 12- to 15-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation that showcases your team's facility to the investors. Include the following:

• Analyze the use of community demographics and accessibility within facility planning for bariatric facilities.

Your investor was intrigued by each of your team's bariatric facility designs. The investor has asked that you provide them with your budget and Gantt chart for them to review.

As a team, select one of the bariatric facilities that were created in the Week Three learning team assignment.

Create a 10- to 12-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation with detailed speaker notes discussing the budget and implementation of your facility. Include the following in your presentation:

• Describe the selected facility.
• Explain how the five project management process groups would be applied to the planning, design, and construction of the project.
• Detail the steps in an implementation plan (Gantt chart) for your bariatric facility based on the five project management process groups.
• Include references and research to support your implementation plan.
• Evaluate budget planning and cost estimates for the bariatric facility you created based on the detailed implementation plan you created.
• Include references and research to support your budget and cost estimates.

• Evaluate the impact of legal and regulatory requirements on the development of organizational health care policies related to facility design for your selected facility.
• Evaluate accountability and liability implications for individuals and organizations within facility design for your selected facility.
• Analyze legal versus ethical considerations related to facility design for your selected facility.

Part 1:

Part 2:

Write a 260- to 350-word summary that includes the following:

• Describe the considerations you made when deciding which equipment you would add to your floor plan.
• Describe the regulatory additions to your floor plan.
• Identify equipment you would have liked to add to your floor plan that was not available in the ToolWire® SmartDraw® program.

Week-5 Environmental Impact

As a team, select a health care facility. Research the standard operating procedures for waste management, fire and safety, and disaster management for your selected facility.

Select 1 area below to use in your presentation:

Create a 12- to 15-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation for one of the selected issues in renovation or new planning of a health care facility. Include the following in your presentation:

• Explain the standard operating procedures for your selected issue.
• Explain the local, state, and federal legal and regulatory requirements. Consider the following agencies:
• Occupational Safety & Health Administration
• Joint Commission of the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
• Your state's health planning and development agency
• Department of Health & Human Services
• Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments and other agencies as applicable to facility planning
• Identify issues to be considered when meeting the International Building Code for your selected facility.
• Describe measurements that may need to be done in advance of the new plan or renovation.
• List the stakeholders that may play a role in your development of the facility.
